Just Another Day Part 11
The boy grabbed the bag of sand and loosened the cord. Then he threw it at the Glorn, dumping its contents in the air. It made a reddish cloud in front of the beast. Confused, the Glorn slowed its approach. The girl must have felt the same way. "YOU'RE GOING TO KILL IT WITH A BAG OF SAND?" "No," the boy replied, "but I am going to slow it down." With that he pulled out the blaster and turned it on. BEEE-ooooo...the blaster started and then stopped, a red light blinking above the grip. "Damn, work you stupid piece of junk!" The beast, finally realizing that it was just sand, started forward through the cloud. The boy hit the blaster with his palm and tried again. BEEEEEEEE-ZZZZT! A blast shot forward. When it reached the cloud there was a blinding flash. The boy turned his head and the girl shrieked. Blinking away the light, he looked at the howling, writhing Glorn. "It's called blooming," he calmly explained, "when the laser hits the sand, the energy spreads out and superheats it." White-hot sand glowed all over the front of the beast and the smell of charred hair and skin filled the small room. "Let's go," the girl pleaded. "Just one last thing," he said. Then he shot a pipe to the side of the Glorn. A mist of gas filled the room and the two could see the sand cooling and hardening, locking its limbs in place. The boy left the blaster hanging in the air and the still howling Glorn stared angrily as the boy disappeared into the vent. As the two scrambled through the ducts, they heard something coming from a grill up ahead. Blaster fire and shouting.
