What type of car is the ALMS prototype supposed to be? It looks like a weird sports/exotic car.

It's a Sports Car Prototype that races in the American Le Mans series-ALMS, which is a series of races very similar to the 24 hours of Le Mans. The prototypes are full-blown race cars that have to conform to rules that make them nearly road legal, they need working lights, space for two seats, covered wheels etc. Also in ALMS there are the GT classes, which consist of real sports cars you'd see on the road, but heavily modified for racing
