I like to call this "Jaded Gamer Syndrome". Nostalgia blinds us to the fact that those games we have fond memories of aren't truly as awesome as we like to remember them.
Remember the 16-bit era? Platformer platformer platformer platformer, fighter fighter fighter fighter.
And RPG if you owned a SNES.
Today's gaming is exactly as rehashed as yesterday's gaming.
As far as 'dumbed down' goes, I prefer to think of it as 'more accessible'.
Complexity be damned, as long as it's still fun.
