So why were the letter grades changed to a 5 scale? I'm curious now...

Because 5/4.5 will get you on the back of game boxes and in trailers, while A/A-, the equivalent letter grade, won't.

There was an actual reason, but I can't remember it. I blame corporate overlords.

We switched to stars so we could better control the score outside of GameRevolution. It was never that letter grades were bad, but that they weren't clear enough. I like the stars perhaps more now (again, not bashing the letters) because we have to come down on one side or the other about things.
