Damn the Man

So tomorrow my work is implementing a program that will limit the amount of time allowed on the internet on non work related sites (I needs my GR time). Does anyone have a good work around for this type of application that I wouldn't have to download onto my work computer and that they would not be able to identify me using it. I believe what they are using is called Websense. Thanks in advance for any help.

I think Mattay said it best. Or you could just be a professional and work like they're paying you for.

This.

Or you could try what Tiny said. It makes the most sense.

Are you guys who say "well you could just work and do what you're being paid for" serious?or do you just say that in case some potential employer looks you up and somehow finds you on a forum and thinks you're a standup guy.

Because I don't know a single person who wouldn't browse the net at their work given the opportunity. Unless if course it was a legitimate career not just a temporary dead end job. Which I assume most of them are when people jump down someone elses throat for not giving it their all at work.

All I know is...it will be very noticeable now when you're bypassing it and looking at blocked stuff. Plus, if your company cracked down on it...well, you should probably let it lie. It's one thing to do so before the change, but after could cause for some upsetting turns to your events.

 Upon refection, don’t do anything that could get you FIRED. With jobs as scarce as they are it’s not worth it.

I will be using my phone a lot more now. It's just annoying that I can't check my bank account or pay my bills or go on here during my lunch break.

Weird as it sounds, some of us do like to earn an honest living without taking advantage of our employers. Guess we're just crazy like that.

you are fucking crazy.
how much do you make (hrly/salary)? Stock options? whats your benefits like? deductible? how many ppl in your dept? how many hrs a week do you work?

Companies are gaming the F*** out of their employees - and i can't take 5 minute reprieves to check my email or look at the news? If youre at your comp doing work and you have multiple tabs open and your getting work done - no harm no foul whats the big deal, but if your work falters as a result of your internet browsing then you need to stop. I work at a progressive company ( i would like to think), not a nazi internment camp.

Not everyone sits in front of a computer. I make decent money, get good benefits and insurance coverage, and Ive worked hard for every promotion and raise I've gotten. And yeah, I goof at off at work sometimes, but if I'm told to not do something, I dont do it. Isn't that what this topic is about? How to curtail something the company is trying to prevent so it can be done anyway?

He didn't say the company had asked him to stop browsing because its eatying up bandwidth or he's on other sites too much - its side stepping the employees and just implementing a program that limits your access to these sites. Basically acting as a parent and blocking the sites. We're not talking about looking at porn at work, or sending violating emails - they're playing prison guard and saying "ok your phone time is all used up, back into your cell!"

Why not hire employees you know will get the job done instead of using your VERY LIMITED RESOURCES to play big brother and monitor peoples browsing habits?

I think its safe to say that in this day and age EVERYONE browses during work hours - how much varies from person to person. And sometimes its a welcomed break from excel spreadsheets.

You should ask your job how much it costs to implement this program vs. how much more efficient they think it'll make the office (esp - when people are miserable). Oh, and ask your bosses if ALL computers will have this program (*ahem* - theirs)

I, for one, would be screwed - because I listen to internet radio most of the time im at my desk.

-daverabbit - where do you work?

A few studies have come out recently showing that employee productivity actually increases when employees break up their work routine occasionally by taking naps and surfing the web. The key word there is occasionally though. Maybe 2 or 3 10-20 minute breaks spread throughout the day.

Unfortunately, the culture is very much the other way on this subject.

Geez, no need to argue people. Just do it on your damn lunchbreak if it's that important to you.
