I'm one of those guys that would do the 100 lives trick with the turtle shell and the steps and then rides it out. I've beat it with and without warp pipes. Strangely enough, I didn't get that you were supposed to "beat" games for a long time. I just played them and had fun. Serious props for mentioning Space Quest, btw.
