Here's the rules. I'll pick one song from one anime, the song that I think best represents that show. I will not comment on the show its self, only the song. If your song isn't on the list or you think I picked the wrong song for the show. Don't get butthurt, post your favorite songs, it's a damn message board after all.
10. The Sore Feet Song - From Mushishi opening credits.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VBBFDb0hC4Y
Quite possibly the most relaxing song I've ever heard. Okay, I'm a sucker for folk and a huge Chet Akins fan. May not be your cup of tea, but I put this own and I want to take a nap.
9. World Without Logos - From Hellsing (TV) opening
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d-KxsdWX9xE
Damn fine song. The jazz instrumentals mixes with the rock overtone, the vocals are soft to the point I've never really understood what the guy was saying. But damn... Shoo boo doo bee doo.
8. The Garden of everything - From Rahxephon Ost Movie
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PvHvxLBfhVw
I've always been a huge fan of Steve Conte since I first watched Cowboy Bebop. The man has such a bluesy voice that's distinct when you hear it. This will make Cowboy Bebop the hardest to judge on this list. This song however is an excellent duet.
7. Be Human - From Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fDtLpCzKqkQ
Not the most obvious choice from GitS huh? Why pick this song? I ask you to listen to the lyrics, and tell me it's not moving. A machine that wants to be human, it's an element that we've seen since the Tinman in Oz (Not to be confused with the prison show about anal rape).
6. Dance of Course - From Escoflowne
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vSlNHi6wgQQ
I despise to use the word 'epic', but it's fitting for this song. The violin screaming at you at the beginning, only a few words are ever said. ESCO FLOWNE! If you haven't guessed it yet, I'm picking a lot of Yoko Kano songs. A little tid bit, this song was reused in a Super Bowl advert where the lyrics were changed to "This stuff, is epic".
5. Gravity - From Wolf's Rain ending credits
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=31P_lCBwdgQ
Such a sad song. It's always amazing to me how music can influence your mood, this song all ways bums me out, it's worse than those Sarah Mclachlan abused puppies. Actually, you want someone to commit suicide? Remove Sarah from those adverts, put this song on, and look at tortured dogs and cats. Goddammit I need a cigarette now.
4. Moon's Cocoon - From Turn a Gundam
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IWJY2zJ8u5s
The build up in this song is what gets me. It's almost Celtic in nature. It starts you out slow like a lullaby, then you're in this electric guitar rift, then the electronics and drums. All the while you're being serenaded by the sweetest voice.
3. Sound life/ Rem's theme - From Trigun ending
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5EQHg_bhCKY
Like I said, I'm a sucker for folk. This song almost has an acid lucid trippy folk feel to it. Don't get me wrong, the Trigun into is amazing, but this is just right up my alley. It says more to me about the general message of Trigun. It captures the more dramatic elements of the show.
*Wow we've sure come far, now we get too that beast of musical melodies, the king of anime, Cowboy Bebop. So many amazing songs to choose from, I'm obviously going to miss your favorite. To be honest, I love them all, but I have to pick one...*
2. Blue - From Cowboy Bebop
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=03qBqP2I4p8
"Ugh FBF why not Space Lion? Or Tank! Or..Or...Or.." Look I had to pick one, and I picked the song that moved me the most. This is a message board, post yours please. Moot-point, why does this song move me? It starts off with an a cappella "Would you listen?" the music slowly creeps in on us. The choir is silent, we have a melodic guitar rift. "Never seen a bluer sky, I can feel it reaching out moving closer, there's something about blue" The lyrics continue, she couldn't answer why blue was important. "Free, wanna be free"
Even if you haven't seen the show, the song is a representation of death, a peaceful death. You enter into the void. And that is why it moves me, it is sublime.
1. Gotta Knock a Little Harder - Cowboy Bebop The Movie.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0V-WGwJJj58
IT'S FAIR I SWEAR! The movie is obviously a separate thing from the TV show. Now let's break this bitch down.
This song is number one on my list because it's the best damn song you'll ever hear in an anime. It is everything from the 60's acid/jazz/folk/rock music period distilled into one of the most badass songs I've ever heard. It's like Janis Joplin singing, Hendrix on the guitar, and Elton John on the piano. It's everything American and it's not.
