Okami (PS2)
182 points
Released as a Sony Playstation 2 game, Okami was an action/adventure that was very different to what we usually see. You are the sun god, Amaterasu, reincarnated in wolf form. The world is in chaos of a highly dark presence, its name being unknown, however the evil is very much known! Your little friend Issun would be your companion, and with him he brings you the Celestial Brush. A tool giving you an innovative array of powers, from blossoming trees, to conjuring up cherry bombs - and even creating lillypads so "Ammy" can travel on water. With an original art form, a fantastic soundtrack, creative worlds and colours, and at least 40 hours of gameplay - Okami brings to life one of the greatest adventures I've come across. So good, it got re-released on the Nintendo Wii.

Banjo-Kazooie (N64)

Platformers are now all but extinct, but it is very rare to see a platformer exceed the wild expectations and help redefine a genre. While Mario 64 gets most of the credit for it, Banjo-Kazooie truly perfected it. With 9 sprawling worlds, catchy music, deep combat and a witty storyline, Banjo-Kazooie is perhaps the best game you never heard of, but it is still one of the best games ever made.

Diablo 2 (PC)

You don't own Diablo 2, D2 owns you. The hero from D1 has become possessed by the lord of terror, and is trying to free his brothers to destroy mankind (that old chestnut). 8 years have passed since the dropping of D2 and people are still playing it with as much fervor as ever. I knew a guy that payed the bills from selling D2 items; I knew a girl that used her charms to get free loot. D2 players come in all shapes and sizes, whether your griefed as many people as possible or played alone, you cannot deny the power it had over your life. I literally spent entire weeks killing the last boss over and over again just for loot, little pictures on my screen. I'm almost ashamed of my D2 days for how much it controlled me, with the recent announcement of D3 on the way; my soul continues to be in limbo.

Resident Evil Remake (GCN)
193 points
When the original Resident Evil hit store shelves back in the late 1990s it changed the way we played our games. It may not have been the first survival horror title but it broke into mainstream mold with it's great visuals, creepy atmosphere, genuinely scary moments and good action not to mention top notch sound effects and...Horrible voice acting? Yes, even that went down in the history books.
So why remake something already so great? When it's as good as the Resident Evil Remake, you really don't need a reason but in case you do, here it is - All of the above mentioned qualities of the original are updated, reinvented and improved upon. The visuals, even by today's standards are considerably well done. The scares are back and more intense than ever, the sound is still top notch but the voice acting...Well, now it's actually good. To top it all off with a nice little cherry the folks over at Capcom decided to add in new content to further the story and gameplay, not to mention the replayability.
Whether you choose to play through the game as S.T.A.R.S members Jill Valentine or Chris Redfield and battle through an eerie mansion full of flesh eating zombies, dogs, giant spiders and other scary monsters and super freaks won't matter because chances are you'll be taking a midnight tour through Resident Evil more than once.

Final Fantasy Tactics (PS1)
196 points
A brief departure from the party-based Final Fantasies of old, Final Fantasy Tactics took the player from the dungeon to the battlefield in an epic squad-based strategy game. Commanding Ramza and his cute little 2D sprite warrior friends, the player was sent on an adventure to the land of Ivalice where they participate in recruiting squadmates and fighting wars of religion and rebellion. The Job System is the real star of the show, making every character's abilities customizable and every playthrough different than the last. Oh, hey, don't forget the BLACK MOTHERFUCKING MAGES!

Tactical action and survival horror thrust gamers into a deep story on mankind’s survival against the Locust Horde, a nightmarish race of creatures that surface from the bowels of the planet. A revolutionary combat system and breathtaking, high-definition visuals from the Unreal Engine 3 immerse ranked high with gamers and many are conquering the sequel as we speak. Gears of War has stunned us all and for that reason alone it ranks at #45.

Chrono Trigger (SNES)
201 points
The brain child of some of the biggest names in RPG making, Chrono Trigger was an amalgam of ideas that turned into perhaps the greatest RPG experience ever conceived. Real time combat, a clever story, fantastic worlds (thanks to the time traveling device) and some of the most memorable characters for an RPG ever, like the lovely Marle and the courageous Frog. Chrono Trigger is a must have for the Super Nintendo, and is a must play for gamers of every creed.

Wii Sports (Wii)

Guitar Hero may have opened doors for diversity in gaming. But the Wii blew the house down. Everyone was fascinated in the new Wii controls that took interactive gaming to a whole new level. And everybody’s first crack at Nintendo’s newest controls was Wii Sports. Players chose between 5 games; Tennis, Baseball, Bowling, Boxing and Golf. The simplicity and smooth controls made the game fun and easy to learn. Wii Sports turned the Wii into an all night party console. The game was so critically acclaimed, it even influenced film Director Steven Spielberg to create a Wii game of his own. Pretty impressive stuff.

Tetris (NES)

The Cold War may be officially over, but the Russian invasion is not, thanks to Tetris. A simple puzzle game that captured the minds of millions, thanks to a Russian developer, Alexi Pajinov, Tetris literally created a genre of video games. Games like Peggle, Bejewled, and Hexic would be nowhere without the mass appeal of their great grandfather, and the frantic pace and simplistic design really make Tetris one of the greatest games ever.
