apparently oldies decided to come back and the GR bug decided to get just a little bit stronger in me so I may as well make a topic...

to ask for advice!

I'm making a presentation for work, I'm fine with basic photoshopping (even though I have Paint.NET and generally make things a little more complicated than they may need to be) but I want to make a .gif of my face starting highly pixelated and becoming clearer and clearer until it's a regular photo. If possible I'd love to have an effect where the pixelated area cycles across my face. Basically the regular photo with an overlaying 'bar' where the middle of the bar is very pixelated and the effect lessens the further from the centre you go. And the bar is moving left to right and back again.

So yeah, I have no clue how to do something like that. The pixelation part I don't think would be too challenging but the animation part, for me at least, would be.

Any advice?

I guess you'd have to make several images with pixelation dialing back and back until it's clear. Honestly don't know of an easier way than that.

That's what I was thinking too. I'd love to know a programming language to code this sort of thing myself. Just a 'pixel filter' laid over the top of a photograph. Alas, I don't know any programming languages and I don't have time to learn one for this.

I really want to learn Vegas, but I suppose I should invest in a copy of Photoshop first. I've been using GIMP and getting a good handle on things, but I need to play with legit photoshop first and then move on to video editing. I've seen some great things done with video games and vegas:

Seriously this probably won't help. But the only way I could think of doing this with my 0 photo editing skills is to paste a picture, shrink it really small, then blow it back up on ms paint. Makes it really pixellated depending on how small it was originally.
