I sat down to play Hyrule Warriors tonight. I think I spent about two or three hours with it.
I can see how it can get repetitive, but I'm having fun with the game so far. I think it's one of those games where for me, I can enjoy it as long as I don't play too much of it in one go. Yes, I know I said that I played for two to three hours and that is a lot of time to spend with it to begin with, but I'll probably dwell my time to an hour per session, similar to what I did with Wolfenstein: The New Order for PS4.
The game throws a heap of Legend of Zelda fan service around. If you're a fan of the Zelda franchise, this should please and amuse you. If you're not a fan of the Zelda franchise, I have no idea why you'd be playing this game, unless you're obsessed with Dynasty Warriors.
The amount of characters on screen is astonishing but of course they're all copy and paste style models. Sometimes the game gets that hectic that the frame rate can drop a bit. Sometimes the mobs of enemies (especially the little "creeps") will just stand there and wait for you to destroy them. Sometimes your allies will also just stand there, even character allies such as Impa. It's like, they'll call out to you to help 'em as they're getting killed, you run over to help and they're just standing there, taking a paddling and you gotta save 'em. You'll find a lot of your allies (mostly the generic soldiers) will just stand there and only fight when there's enemies nearby.
It is pretty cool to fight bosses in big, hectic battles. Gives it a kinda epic war feeling, which is obviously what the game is going for. I especially had more fun battling the smaller, humanoid bosses, rather than the gigantic beasts. So far I've unlocked five characters, but my favourite characters so far to play as are Link and Impa.
I've finished four missions so far and I'm not sure how many there are in total, but each mission takes about forty five to sixty minutes to do. Never been killed in battle, but I have failed missions due to other characters dying or our main base being taken by the enemy.
The storyline is a bit dumb, but it doesn't really bother me. The graphics are pretty good, I think they're better than most reviewers describe (a lot of reviewers say it's an average looking game). The sound track is hit and mix... the orchestra sounds great, the orchestra and rock can sound cool, or sometimes super repetitive.
In battle, I find the dialogue very distracting, especially because it's all text based with no voice acting. So when you're busy fighting, characters say stuff on screen, it can be a little difficult to read what they're saying while fighting a hundred guys at once.
I've yet to play co-op, but I might see if my brother or my girlfriend will want to give that a try on the weekend.
So far I'm enjoying it, but it probably helps that I'm a big Zelda fan.
