Best Music You Wish People Have Heard Of And Liked

Okay, I'm just going to say it straight up: This topic is entirely self-serving as I just broke up with my girlfriend and want new music that doesn't remind me at all of her to soothe my soul for the next little while as I'm a bit of an audiophile and shared everything I know with this person and now I'm left with nothing and am just sitting here wishing I could listen to music to get this girl off of my mind but I can't because it all reminds me of her now and this is all really cliche so I thought I'd express this opening in a bit of a Faulkner-esque stream of consciousness- type fashion to mask the fact and keep people from making fun of me.

BUT! In my self-serving, I'd might as well open up new avenues for others. :)

So, my contribution:

~The Walkmen: TBH I have no idea how popular these guys actually are. When I saw them in concert there were a lot of hipsters around, but I think they were all there for Beach House. They're most known for "The Rat," but I like the mellower, lighter side that they've been turning towards in recent years.

Songs to check out: In The New Year, Four Provinces, Angela Surf City, Blue As Your Blood, The House You Made (current favorite)

~The Mollies: So I mentioned them before ages ago...local band, and the singer has the voice of an angel. She's also in a band called Late Night Alumni which is apparently more popular, but I'm sticking with The Mollies. Very folky, dare I say "girly"...but if everyone loves K-pop, I can love this.

Songs to check out: Fly Me To The Moon, Star Bits, DOOM, Fancies Are Fiends

~Puggy: A French band with a British vocalist. Actually very good...I heard about it from a kid who was going to their concert. I'm glad I bothered to jot the name down!

Songs to check out: Dubois, When You Know, We Have It Made

...

Oh, and hi, guys! It's been a little while! How's life?

Yorky! You're Back! How was spreading the good word? Sorry to hear about your lady. Just know we're all loners here, which means none of us are alone.

But music:

Local Natives - Seriously. It's a pretty hipster band, but some of the best music I've ever heard. Incredible use of harmonies, and a fresh sound.

Songs to check out: Wide Eyes, Sun Hands, World News, Who Knows Who Cares

Young Galaxy - More electronic/ambient, but anybody with a good taste in music can get into these guys. Absolutely incredible

Songs to check out: Peripheral Visionaries, Blown Minded, Cover Your Tracks, The Angels Are Surely Weeping

Lotus - Jam/electronic band. One of the most incredibly talented bands. A definite must-listen if you are a fan of lengthy, intrumental brilliance.

Songs to check out: Spiritualize, Tip of the Tongue, Livingston Storm, Jump Off

Lotus = <3

Sound Tribe Sector 9 (STS9) - Only download live shows, no one cares about their albums. I have lots I can send you, but there's lots of shows floating around. Alot of post '08 stuff is live and at 320 kbps. My 2nd favorite band of all time.

Zion I - extremely good hip hop, not as political as Immortal Technique or Jedi Mind, but smooth and positive none the less.

Yeasayer - I'm sure you prob know yeasayer, I saw them in May and they were alot more bass heavy than before, but still wonderful.

Toubab Krewe - From Asheville, NC. They're very indian/guitar jam. Both albums are awesome.

Yorky! Welcome back, brother. I too just recently broke up with my girlfriend. It really sucks. Fortunately for me though, she listens to country, and I don't, so I don't have your problem. I'll post up some music for you tomorrow when I'm not so tired.

Rakon: It was la bomba! Seriously, I still miss it, and it's been nearly a year since I've finished (craziness).

NickKmet: Yeah, I just read your topic. I'm really sorry to hear about that. :( It really sucks, but there is a kind of liberating aspect to it...especially if things went a bit awry near the end, as it did with mine. Right now I'm in a kind of static state where all women are automatically friend-zoned, but I'll snap out of it before long. I wish you the best of luck, in any case!

I'm down for new music. I've gotten into Marvin Gaye lately. As you've said, music is sublimely ethereal to the music lover so listening to anything good will probably have you thinking of your ex sooner than later. You gave her the best life you could've given her while you two were together, right?
SO! My point is to also get back into listening the music you like.

Look, I just don't want to hear about you listening to Ozzy Osbourne's Mr. Crowley on repeat for the next 6 months because it doesn't remind you of your ex... :(

Ok, here's a bunch of stuff.

I think that's enough. I picked from a wide selection of genres. I will say though, most of the music I listen to these days is either from movie soundtracks or is classical music.

Also, here's my top 50 most played of all time on last.fm (I've had it since I was 16, so there's an eclectic mix of genres)

The American Dollar, Bear Vs. Shark, STS9, Portugal. The Man, Copy, Across Five Aprils, Modest Mouse, A Silver Mt. Zion, The Fall Of Troy, God Is an Astronaut, Kimya Dawson, The Shaky Hands, Ghosts and Vodka, Sufjan Stevens, Radicalfashion, the blonding dandelions, Minus the Bear, Dr. Acula, Why?, Trophy Scars, Lotus, Weather Report, Lil' Wayne, MGMT, Barr, La Dispute, Dear and the Headlights, Explosions in the Sky, Cannons, Talking Heads, Yeasayer, Crystal Castles, Iron & Wine, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, RJD2, City and Colour, Sigur Rós, If These Trees Could Talk, marc/mike/brandon/volunteers/band, Jedi Mind Tricks, Pretty Lights, Sequoyah Prep School, Beat Radio, High and Driving, Hammock, The Spill Canvas, Zion I, Andrew Bird, Band of Horses, The Beatles.

Anywho, I listen to all sorts of music. A good bit of music that I think people haven't heard of is.

Hip hop: Sage Francis, Buck 45, Aesop Rock, Atmosphere, Slug

Rock: Guitar Wolf, yura yura Teikoku, Stamp Foot, Yeah Yeah Yeahs *I think people have heard of them a lot recently*, Metric, The Islands, Tsunami Bomb, The Action Design.

Lounge: Richard Cheese[/url]

Thanks a lot for the suggestions, guys! From what I've heard so far, I really like Local Natives and Portugal. The Man.

I've got a few more to offer:

Late Night Alumni

I'll mention them officially this time. It's basically a collaboration between The Mollies and Kaskade (I think?). Really chill music--very relaxing and cool to drive with.

Songs to check out: Empty Streets, You Can Be The One, Beautiful

Faded Paper Figures

Continuing the chain of "bands by association," the frontman of this band is the brother of The Mollies/Late Night Alumni singer. I can't think of how to describe this band...I found them yesterday. They're good, in any case.

Songs to check out: Small Talk, Metropolis

Eliza Wren

Another local artist...she's done a cool project recently where her album was basically a soundtrack to be played alongside "Return to Oz." There's a little example here.

Haun's Mill

Eliza Wren heads this band with her husband, I think...? Anyways, they've got quite a few songs out from their upcoming album. Some of the videos are cheap (though not all of them), but the music's pretty original.

Songs to check out: Blind Draw, Fitzcarraldo

Cocoon

Another French band, but they sing in English. I like them a lot. Very calm, beautiful stuff. I think they just broke up, though... :/

Songs to check out: On My Way, Comets, Cathedral

Other random tidbits:

French Kicks: Abandon

Beach House: Zebra

DeVotchKa: 100 Other Lovers

Ramona Falls: I Say Fever

By the time people get here they'll be all linked out, so I'll keep it simple.

The Middle East - Blood

Tokoyo Police Club - Your English is Good

Sam Roberts - Brother Down

Music threads suck cause everyone thinks theyre a music conoisseur that understand what great music is and no one else does. I feel like HOW CAN EVERYONE NOT LOVE MY MUSIC ITS GENIUS, but alas, everyone has different tastes. Half the music in this thread i couldnt listen to in its entirety without clawing at my ear drums. Doesnt mean its bad though, just not for me.

The only people who make me wanna cry are people who listen do nothing but heavy metal, or country.

Ill post some stuff later when i get home but im sure no one will like it.

I don't think that at all. I'm just sharing some indie music that you may not have heard of and maybe you might like it. If not, big deal.

Although I agree there are those (not in this thread) who brag about being down with underground music. Just like a true pretenious hipster.
