Question about console-modification

So I've had blue balls over Super Smash Bros. Brawl for nearly three months, and I got tired of waiting, so a friend and I are buying a Wii ModChip and importing a copy of Brawl. Plus the idea of having a game like Brawl even two weeks before the legions of Super Smash fans where I live sounds pretty good right now.

Anyways, I had a couple questions. This of course requires one to open their Wii, and I'm a little worried about giving it a vasectomy. How easy is it to mess up one of these little operations if you buy a reasonable chip? Also, what kind of trouble can you get in if all you use it for is international gaming?
