I can't work out how to get the invisible boxes and circles to materialize can any one tell me what I need to do to get them?

Let me help you, for the invisible boxes/circles, you usually need to hit a "?" switch crate (the ones with the exclamation mark) somewhere in the level. Once you find and smash it, the hidden crates will show up so you can collect them. They’re often tucked away or on alternate routes, so keep an eye out. Hope that helps — good luck!
