But there's no difference between 30FPS and 60FPS

The gaming community is very moany community isnt it? That's all I learn when I read articles about fps and resolution and the rest of that bollocks.

Get a fucking life (or job)...fucking hell. It's meant to be a recreational activity in the end. Like a film or a box of chocolates or something.

I've watched people who are really into films sit and talk about a lot of the technical aspects of film making. Ever see a couple of people who were really into cars break down a bunch of car stuff. Spots people breaking down every aspect of their favorite team?

It's what people who are passionate about their hobby do.

^ I do exactly that, C_nate. Well, not about cars anyway.

Multimedia and digital media is my job, so when it comes to technical aspects like resolution, frame rates etc, I really notice and I appreciate those kind of things. My former colleague and I used to talk about this stuff all the time, where as some people will say to me "What's so good about HD?" which makes me cringe, but that's because it's a part of my job and my passion.

For example, I know people are going to roll their eyes at this, but while I loved The Last of Us on PS3, when I played The Last of Us: Remastered on PS4, I loved the difference. I loved the higher resolution and I loved the higher frame rate. Call me sad, but it made the experience feel entirely new to me.

Some people are techies that will appreciate the finer aspects of technology.

Other people will misunderstand them.

Yeah, but games didnt used to be like that did they. You weren't looking at Crash Bandicoot going - ah this resoution is shit isnt it?! That Pong is a piece of gash, cant even tell where the ball's going its frame rate is so bad!
That's what's annoying me - I dont want them to turn into those overly technical criticised things. And it's to the point now where if devs dont say 1080p and 60fps at a conference showcasing their game no one's going to bloody buy it.

There's a line between criticising the result, and then just plain bloody moaning.

It's an annoyance, like a back itch I cant reach, I'll get over it.

One of the biggest reasons for the PS2 and Gamecube looking so good at release was because the early games ran 50/60fps compared to 25/29.97fps the PS1/N64 generally ran at.
Gran Turismo 3 springs to mind as a good example.

Resolution isn't as important, but it's when we see bullshit like 900p@30fps that it's either laziness or stupidly from the developers.
We have the hardware to support a decent resolution and a silky smooth framerate. There is no reason at all not to run a steady 60fps when it is clearly so superior from a gameplay standpoint.

That shows the best example i can use for the gameplay argument, you simply wouldn't be able to see someone down the road at 30fps whereas at 60 you might be able to react in time.

Once we've got everyone demanding and seeing the difference for 60fps, we can start talking about 120fps...

I really want to be apart of this thread, but I won't have access to a desktop or laptop for another 4 days. What I will say is this.. Playing on your TV or computer... Maybe you can notice the 60 fps difference, but streaming n watching videos 30 v 60 is irrelevant and you cannot tell the difference. The difference in quality is not due to the fps

But life IS a box of chocolates. And I'm sure Lieutenant Dan would still have his legs if the Vietnam War was 60 FPS instead of this crappy real life vision we all have.

There is definitely a difference. Go check out some 60fps porn and report back. Not the sped up kind either. The real captured at 60fps stuff.

I would give you links but that would be breaking the rules around here.

CS:GO was so easy to spot, just straight away.
Got 11/11 although gotta admit the ninja turtles game threw me for a few seconds.

Got 11/11 as well. The last game threw me off a little due to the simplistic, but effective design.

11/11. Like Craig said, the last game threw me off due to that sun dropping. After that is was easy to spot the difference. I don't know how you can't tell the difference. The 60FPS is way smoother.

Now, it isn't mandatory to have like Craig mentioned, but I'd prefer it over 30FPS.

Ha, I got 11/11! Didn't expect that!

Still don't think it's essential to the enjoyment of my gaming experience but that's me. The fact that they have this comparison game shows how close they are.

It's certainly not essential, I agree MattAY. However, I'd be lying if I didn't say I prefer 60 FPS.

I remember a long time ago, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty on the PS2 ran at 60 FPS. It was nice, smooth, never slowed down. Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater then came out and ran at 30 FPS. Back then, I didn't know much about "FPS" or anything, but I questioned it "Why is this game slower?", and I heard MGS3 received a bit of criticism on the Internet about it too.

To be fair, MGS3 had the 30 FPS (and the occasional frame rate drop) because of how much bigger and more detailed the environments were compared to MGS2, plus more enemies on location and whatnot, more action, so it was certainly understandable. And while I do prefer 60 FPS over 30, MGS3 is still my favourite MGS game to date.

I played MGS3 again on the PS3 HD remaster and I was happy to see that MGS3 was 60 FPS. It made the game feel smoother and more fluid... but again that being said, 60 FPS isn't necessary for me to enjoy a game, I'm not going to reduce a game's "score" just because it's 30 FPS... but I certainly do enjoy 60. :p

To be honest it is nice to live in an age where we actually know what the fuck we're talking about. We all know what FPS stands for (it's a shooter game, right?) And if we don't we have the internet to tell us.

Back in the day, before all this FPS talk it was all about the bits. 8 bit, 16 bit, 32 bit, NINTENDO SIXTY FOOOOOOOUR! OH MY GOD! But we had no clue what the hell a bit was. Shit, I still don't know.

Haha, oh man. Yeah I remember those old days. "Nintendo is eight bit. Super Nintendo is sixteen bit. Nintendo 64 is... my God, SIXTY FOUR?! OH MY GOD!" I still don't quite understand the whole "bit" thing either.

Frame rates and frames per second I do understand now, due to my job in multimedia. I guess that's why I appreciate things like the frame rate (e.g. 60 FPS) as well as 1080p resolution and whatnot. Like I said before, I appreciate 60 FPS and I do appreciate 1080p resolution, but it's not vitally necessary. It's just nice to have.

I remember years ago, we had my oldest brother's old HD TV, which wasn't full HD. It was also a really annoying TV to set up, it required this big arse TV stand or else you'd need to annoyingly tilt the TV. My middle brother kept asking me to set it up, but I just thought "bugger it" and decided to buy a new TV (which is my current TV, a 1080p LCD Sony Bravia smart TV, 40 inches).

My brother disagreed with my purchase, going on about how he didn't see the difference between SD and HD. Again due to my multimedia job, I tried to explain the difference but he wouldn't listen.

So we got the TV and to test it, I loaded up Mass Effect 2 on the PS3. He sees the title screen and says "I don't see a difference". Then I load up a mission, and it's the bonus DLC mission where Shepard can visit the planet/moon that the Normandy crashed on. My brother looks stunned, then finally admits, "Okay I see the difference now."

A victory for me. :p

Lets switch the debate. We all know we would prefer a game that ran at 60fps all the time or above but what about those games that just cant make it that high all the time? Kind of like how the consoles don't seem to have enough juice to play 1080p 60fps.

Would you leave a games frame rate uncapped to where the frame-rate fluctuates between 42-60 fps or should a game just go ahead and cap at 30fps?

I have a Nvidia Gsync monitor so I prefer uncapped as my monitor will sync its refresh-rate with whatever frame rate a game is running at at the time. Hopefully freesync will bring this to the next gen consoles in the future.
