I don't mind ads, but that was definitely a bug or something.

That's happened to me a couple times as well, along with the popup that greys-out the background (in desktop mode) not going away. Usually a reload or two gets rid of it.

Reloads were bringing nothing but different ads. Mostly those super disturbing anti-smoking ads with the toothless woman and the guy with the hole in his throat.
