What's with the forcing of a gap around everything?

When there's a big picture in the forums you need to scroll to the right even though there's a giant gap on the left of the page... what's the point? Please get rid of the gap on the left of the page!

I don't know much about webpage design, but I alwayss thought that was kind of a saveguard against different viewing resolutions screwing up the page. Like, with the content locked to the middle, the page won't stretch oddly, even if you view it in 800 X 600 or in 1280 X 1024.

Hell, even GameSpot has it.
