they had it setup, but with like 30,000+ people its hard to keep a network stable, especially with booths setting up their own access points and jumping onto the network. So, I am not surprised that it took a dump a few times, more so with the heat/humidity.

And all our network problems were at the hotel which was like 10 block away. 3G isn't that bad. I mean I wasn't in my hotel room to play more games lol. 3G on phones are bad, because the phone has to process all the info and is doing other things in the background, so it seems slow. With tethering it just transfer the data over to the usb port, I was getting like 1mb down (at night).
