Alone in the Dark??

Well I have just purchased Alone in the Dark "The new Nightmare" my first pc game! and I am stuck at the first hurdle.
I have looked at the cheats available on this site but they are all for levels which sad to say I have not even reached yet.
I am a little embarrassed to say that I am having a little difficulty getting out of the initial wood and through the gate to get to the manor!?
I am supposed to find a key which will open the gate, I think I have maybe found a key on the floor of this small building which had a guy in who had been wounded but has now disappeared presumed dead...but I cannot seem to pick it up?
Can anyone who has played this game help? :?

Unfortunately, I cannot quite remember what to do in that situation. You're playing as Carnby, correct?
I played as Eileen, because I liked the idea of trekking through the manor as opposed to trekking through the woods (although Carnby does eventually reach the manor). I did play as Carnby, but can't remember it

Right thanks for that Chris, but, excuse my ignorance, this is my first PC game, so what is a walk-through and what do I do with the info you have given me

the key is round a corner somewhere. I remember that from the gameboy color version. Wow, first PC game for you then..

A walkthrough is a guide to just - walk through! - a game. quite easy really when you have one.

oK well firstly I do not really want to walk through, but would rather find the key to get through the gate.
Now if anyone has this game it is the first thing that you have to find and is only 2 minutes into the game!
I cannot find any corner that you mention?
As for the walkthrough well I know what one is but do not know what to do with the code/text <IMG src="images_in_signatures_suck_ass.jpg"> that chris has provided.

I belive that you must stand over it and press action it is in a room its pretty shiny

Ok thanks everyone I now have the key!!
wot i was doing wrong was, wen i pressed action my gun fired a bullet, cos to point my torch at the object my gun is also aimed, now i no i only need to stand above the object, stupid me.
Right so thanks, now as for the cheat file,
