Yeah I'm wondering that too. I just wiki'd him and turns out he's come first place in some polls of best tv character ever. The show finished some years before we were born and obviously didn't repeat much in Nz or Aus because this was the first I had heard of him.
Poor Mal. Always fighting on the losing side.
All In the Family is a great, great show that is kind of known for not being very politically correct, but most of the humor still works because the main character of Archie Bunker is really the butt of all of his own potentially racist and sexist jokes. Shame you Aussies didn't see it.

Leela (Futurama) smashes Steve (American Dad) 18 - 0
Launchpad (Ducktales) launches a comeback to defeat Nick (CSI) 10 - 7
Jack (24) outpowers Hiro (Heroes) 15 - 3
American Dad defeats Diffrent Strokes 13 - 6
Let's consider the fallen. Meatwad and Mal are both very loved characters who went down swinging but couldn't mount a comeback. Nick had the lead for most of the fight but couldn't keep up in the end. I would like to think Hiro's big defeat has a lot more to do with the quality of his oppontant then himself but he makes another popular Heroes character not to make it into round 2. Steve was slaughter, but his family lives on. Different Strokes just couldn't handle the power that was American Dad.
Speaking of American Dad, it's the first show to finish all it's matches. Boringman should be please his show got through round 1 along with 4 out of 5 of it's characters.
Enough about Match 05, time for the next fight.
