How to convert video files compatible with multiple devices?

Originally I’d like to convert video files for use on my iPad. Source files are off bd and did. I also convert HD 264 to a version that works on the iPad (to overcome the AAC etc restrictions apple has put in place). I chose PavTube because it got great reviews on only reviews by computer sites. Converted files get played off a NAS on a home system that includes HD (4k) tv, normal def TV, iPads and a Sony duo ultrabook. I prefer HD h264 format of video.
