Developer Discussion: Designing Skill-Based Combat for a Modern MMORPG

I wanted to share a bit about an upcoming MMORPG we’re working on called Warvox and get some honest community feedback.

The core focus is fast, skill-based combat—movement, timing, and positioning matter more than rotations. We’re building an open world with PvE, structured PvP, and a survival-style battle mode, all designed to reward player skill rather than daily chore loops.

The game isn’t launched yet, and development is still heavily community-driven. I’m especially curious what you feel modern MMOs are still missing when it comes to combat feel, progression, or long-term engagement.

Happy to answer questions and listen.

Warvox sounds really promising, especially the emphasis on skill-based combat over rigid rotations and grind-heavy loops. A lot of modern MMOs struggle with making combat feel impactful, so focusing on movement, positioning, and timing could really set your game apart. One thing many players still want is meaningful progression that isn’t tied only to daily chores — systems like mastery-based rewards, skill expression unlocks, or cosmetic progression tied to achievements could boost long-term engagement. Also, strong social tools (guild content, open-world events, and player-driven economies) tend to keep communities active. Excited to see how the combat and survival mode evolve — best of luck with development!
