When it comes to beer, you can fool some of the drinkers all of the time and frustrate all of them some of the time. But you cannot dupe all drinkers all of the time.
Not everyone is an economic nationalist certainly not Tory Leader Tim Hudak, the latest politician to call for selling beer in corner stores. But the idea that your unfriendly local beer monopoly is run out of Belgium, Brazil, Japan and America sticks in the craw of every drinker.
It's not just the flow of beer, but the cash flow that remains tightly controlled. The Beer Store doesn't like to acknowledge "profits," preferring to use the term "costrecovery" and still refuses to disclose the results. By how much does this its cash "recovery" exceeds its "costs?" As a privatelyheld monopoly, The Beer Store keeps its balance sheet hidden.
The Beer Store is not so much a miserable retail experience as it is a misplaced wholesale encounter. In no other retail emporium on the planet (outside of North Korea) is the customer encouraged to spend so little time on the premises exploring other products, while being milked for so much money. Hence its nickname, the "In and Out Store."
It's not modern retailing, it's sabotage. Even the "Ice Cold Express" that offers up the top 10 beers in refrigerated display cases is rigged to bolster the iron grip of the bestselling brands by freezing out the competition.

Reporter: But he does not like the look of this, a seemingly sudden announcement from the company on wednesday, saying the 54yearold has been terminated, even though he was the founder and face of the corporation. Zimmer shot back in a statement of his own, telling abc news, he built the men's warehouse into a milt billion dollar company. But now that board of directors has inappropriately chosen to silence my concerns. A stock analyst who follows the company says zimmer has reduced his role over the past two years, during which time a new ceo has been appointed. But thatimmer had trouble relinquishing control, which led to this current conflict. This all has to be a bitter pill for zimmer to swallow. I went to the men's warehouse. Reporter: He founded the COMPANY IN THE 1970s. This little bald guy was the initial spokesman. That didn't go over so well. IN THE MID1980s, ZIMMER STEPPED In and shot hundreds of ads. And he still owns 3% of the men's warehouse, a stake worth more than 66 million bucks.
