Terrible Game Mechanics

This is the Overrated Games topic's side-spawn. Name a game convention, the existence of which you simply do not understand.

KoalaRainbowPoop said something very true in the other topic. I don't understand why escort missions in shooters exist. I can't think of a single instance in which they have ever been fun. I understand it is supposed to add variety to the repetitive nature of a shooter, when really it's just making whatever bland gameplay there is less fun. It's like adding a piece of shit to a sandwich because the sandwich is bland. Regardless of how bland a sandwich is, a piece of shit generally has a negative effect on the overall taste.

Anyways, post your least favorite gaming convention.

1 hit kills made by the enemies. like for instance, dead space, the final boss. if you don't destroy all it's tentacles in time it will eat you. bad enough it's hard to do upside down, worst yet when you have to re watch the whole friggin cut scence agian.

also those god damn banzai attacks in cod:waw. seems no matter how fast you push r3, it all comes down to luck. bad enough when ya are facing a whole swarm of enemies and ya have killed what feels like hundreds of em only to be killed in one hit. it doesn't ever add challenge to a game. it adds cheapness, plain and simple.

Turret sections. You control a immobile weapon and just kill people. It's plain boring, or sometimes annoying.

Catapult missions in Heavenly sword really made my blood boil...

I think "mechanics" is what you were looking for in the title.

I kept thinking "Blizz Con is kinda cool..." every time I read it.

Moronic AI, (looking at you Fallout 3) where the NPC takes 3 minutes to get past a small cliff (which has happened to me) makes the game frustrating. You would think it would not be hard to jump off the cliff.

any strategy games that the only way to get a hold of your opponent is if you have more units
(Warcraft, advance wars: days of ruin.)

walking/driving for a ridiculously long time just to get from one point to the next, like exploring planets on mass effect, driving back and forth in GTA:SA, or walking for an eternity in morrowind. Sometimes, stuff like that makes me want to quit the game.

Grinding in RPGs, or any game. This is just like bomby's complaint, only it's related to level-ups, instead of walking or driving. I really hate having to kill the exact same enemies in the exact same way more than a few times. Variety is the spice of life, after all.

Knock down spamming: I'm not a fan of watching as my character flops on the ground, helpless to the barrage of attacks that hit him/her. I'm looking at you Mass Effect Biotics.

Instant Death Terrain: Also looking at Mass Effect. I'm not a fan of having my back tire cross a centimeter into lava only to hear "den den den den"

Computer opponents automatically being capable of doing moves off the fly. I'm talking about fighting games but more specifically, Super Street Fighter II Turbo: HD Remix. The "charge" characters don't need to "charge" their attacks and can just do all their moves right off the bat. For example, Blanka can do his forward flying roll attack without having to charge backwards, hell he walks forward as he busts it out. Then you've got Blanka flying all over the damn place and it is quite hard to fight him.

One thing that annoyed the hell out of me was in Far Cry 2, how you would be driving out in the middle of nowhere, and then suddenly an enemy vehicle rams right into you. It's as if the enemy vehicle is just spawned nearby and aimed to attack you. Even worse when it's a car with a turret on it or something. Ugh.

Regenerating health in fps, I feel that regenerating health sort of makes you play the same way all the way through the games(fight till you're hurt, hide, wait till normal, repeat), while needing health kits makes you play differently depending how well off you are.

I know, and accept that it's the thing now, a man can dream.
oh well.

^ I agree. With health kits the game makes you very wary about your health. When I play games with an actual health bar (only to recover via health packs and whatnot) I tend to play with caution if my health gets too low. I either try and avoid enemies all together and either get out of there or search for health packs. Or if I do have to fight enemies I will try to play either carefully (e.g head shots, take them out ASAP) or cheaply (use whatever to win e.g grenades).

As for regenerative health, I find that you just fight/play and then when you're low on health you simply run away and hide and wait for your health to fully regenerate. I did this in Uncharted: Drake's Fortune and I am once again doing it in 007: Quantum of Solace (not the greatest game ever but I borrowed it off a friend to try it out).

Regenerative health was cool when it came out but a lot of games are using it nowadays. I can't say if I like or dislike it, really. It's strange.

I like it when health regenerates slowly, but I don't like it when games don't have it at all, or don't make health packs readily available. Like Far Cry 2, where you get 4 health packs, and have to go all the way to a safe area or sack a barrack to get more.

Also, I like it more when health regenerates in chunks. This is one of the things the first Resistance did right that the second didn't.

While I'm on the subject, games where you can only carry 2 guns. What is up with that? 2 guns and a pistol, a la Gears of War or R6 Vegas, I can understand, but not just 2 guns of any type, assault rifle, pistol, and rockets don't matter. Just that there are two of them.

^I actually like being limited to two guns at a time. It makes gameplay more balanced and realistic. You have to choose how you equip yourself wisely.

I will give you $200 if you can carry around 2 large weapons, body armor, ammo and grenades for more than 5 minutes.
