So who wants to go to mars?

On becoming one of the astronauts.

http://mars-one.com/en/faq-en/21-faq-se ... -astronaut

If you are too lazy to click and read the links, there is a private space program called Mars One. The goal of Mars One is to send humans to mars, who will start a mars colony. The first launch is planned for 2023, and they will continue to send more people there in groups of 4 during the program. Anyone can apply to be an astronaut, but the people who get accepted will end up living there for the rest of their lives. The selection process part will be a reality TV show. People will be selected based on how well they interact with each other. This TV show is also a way for them to raise the funds for this project.

I am a bit skeptical if this thing will ever happen. Their business plan relies on investors throwing money at the project with little to no chance of getting a profit. I am not sure if the colony will be able to do anything that will cause them to make money either. The idea of becoming one of the first humans on mars is tempting, though.

Thank God capitalism is taking over the space programs.

NASA would never have an idea as great as a Mars reality show.

Do I get a life insurance plan? I gotta clone myself or make a baby that way I have someone to give it to.

this will never happen by 2023, period.

but fuck yes would i love to. even though everyone would likely go insane and it'll be an unstoppable blood bath. best reality TV show ever.

edit: missed the rest of your lives, fuark no.

maybe if it was some habitable planet in another solar system. not mars.

The Shining in Space? SURE SIGN ME UP!

No sex, isolation, and the possibilities of anybody snapping. Yeah, great, let me just go pack my inanimate carbon rod incase the pod door won't close.

I mean seriously, going to Mars is an experience so thrilling, so exciting, so breathtaking that none of us can imagine it despite what we've seen on TV and computers. BUT, for the rest of your lives? The majority of us here are in our 20's and we've still got a looooooong way to go. After 10-20 years wouldn't you miss Earth? Miss going out side? Miss oceans and blue skies and green fields and all that stuff we take for granted? I dunno... and no sex? For the rest of your life? I'd rather live in North Korea.

EDIT, ok so I misread. It just says no making babies, you can still do the nasty. I wonder what sex inzero gravity is like? Actually... no... ew... awww ewwwwww

imagine when you started to get home sick, looking at earth from mars, knowing everyone you love is there and there is no way in hell you're going back.

would drive a person nutty real quick.

people will go crazy a lot quicker than 10-20 years. i imagine itd take a few months tops before people started to snap.

Mars has gravity, it is just about 1/3rd of what it is on earth. Probably will feel like sex in water but without the nasty extra friction caused by the water.

Do I get computer part shipments from earth? Do I have access to earths internet from mars?
If so I will be fine.

I cant wait to grow some medical marijuana on mars.
Wait no medical marijuana? I don't think I want to go to mars anymore.

Oh I knew Mars has gravity, like all planets. But it would be a long ride there.... You would put the mile high club to shame.

A lot of people are looking for humans on mars between 2020 and 2030. SpaceX, for example, wants to have someone on mars before 2035. And considering how successful they're being lately, it's looking good. 2023 seems a bit optimistic. I'm thinking humans may be on the way to mars in 2025, though.

You could very well make a convincing argument to bring some plants along with you. Combine the oxygen producing properties with the 'everyone get high so we don't kill each other' properties, and it'll probably end up being the most valuable resource in the long run.
Or just smuggle that shit with you. What are they gonna do, call the space cops?

stop arguing what i say with complete irrelevance or i'll kill all your kangaroos.

i never said people won't be on mars by 2023, i said there will not be a random group of people sent to mars that were determined by a reality show by 2023.

the "this" in my sentence, referred to the information within "this" thread. which will not happen by 2023.

i do believe, however, that there is a small possibility man will have gone to Mars by 2023, but deserving candidates. not a bunch of randoms who happen to get along with each other.

I'd love to go, but I don't see why we'd have to stay there the rest of our lives. I'm sure there's enough hydrogen and other elements in the Martian soil and atmosphere that could be converted into fuel for a return trip.
A few years before we go, launch an unmanned lander to start some sort of conversion process. Once humans arrive, we'd have to wait a couple years for a launch window to open. Surely within that time, enough fuel could be produced to break atmosphere and reach an orbiting return craft.

They said hanky panky and the conception of children is discouraged. They didn't say restricted though.

Think of the scientific research opportunities. Have we ever studied the effects of zero gravity on the process of human development? The 500 day or so trip would be more than enough time to study the process in full.

I just read that.

They said hanky panky and the conception of children is discouraged. They didn't say restricted though.

If I am chosen I will definitely 100% disregard that rule. I must be the father of the martian master race.

Can't wait for some zero-g porn.
