I always heard it as "basest" form of humor. So what's a "basest"? Base means common, or fundamental. Puns are the most common, basic verbal gags. That means more people make puns than just about any other type of joke (except maybe fart noises), so chances are, you've heard some really bad ones. A bad pun is like a smelly burp or fart, in fact, the reactions of people around you to all three are usually identical. But bad puns reflect the punner, not the form, because as GR knows, a good pun is hard work. Just like playing video games
