Lethean, why are you still a moderator?

Only asking because you're online right now. Everyone else eventually leaves. You stayed.

Why?

I'm not trolling. Just wondering what keeps the current group on, and what made the previous moderators leave. Lack of free time? "Adulthood"? Again, it's not personal. Fuck the asshole who comes in saying it is.

Used and Lethean only, nothing personal, they just predate "oldschool"... and know what I mean by that statement. Or maca, but he's pretty much gone so whatever on that front.

While someone else can answer better I can tell you what I've learned.

A lot of the old blood left when Duke left. Ever since Dan has been Grandmaster you've had new blood like myself and Brett. Although Brett, Dan and I have been here over 5 years so perhaps "new blood" isn't the right term. While I can't speak for Lethean, Longo and Used I will say we're all cool with Dan and vice versa. There is no animosity with the change in staff so I would say that's why Lethean still looks after the forum.

Keep in mind that this is not the case for everyone. Some people like Shaft and Maca are just too busy with adulthood and their absence has nothing to do with Duke leaving the forums.

If you ever have a problem with one of the mods or admins we ask that you take it up with them personally in PM. Yes, we can be immature sometimes, but it's all in good fun and we will take your PM seriously.

I come here time to time because I love the sound of crickets.

*crickets*

Mm yeah that's the ticket...erm...cricket.

Thanks, Wicked. I always viewed the mod position as a sort of curse. It's fun, and then it's not. Then it's a chore that someone, anyone, can take care of but-not-me sort of position. dUKE thought so, too. Maybe I still have the PM where we talked about moderators, and what it really all meant. I just wonder why the senior citizens still bother. Maca knew to leave, and I didn't really remember Shaft being a moderator... must of been a quick stint.
I'm not asking why old timers leave the forums, I'm asking why old timers decide to stay on as mods. Leaving that spot has been a tradition going back to Kaanchtoofan, and that dude worked his way up to writing editorials for GR back when dUKE was running the show, getting equal billing with with GR contributors who'd freelance for EGM at the same time (bad move, Kaan). Maybe the hummingbird porn is still enough for some?
heh, obviously i don't have that pm, as that was tied to a different account. bleh

I don't know if Shaft was a mod, it's before my time. I could have mistaken him for someone in charge of the chat?

Basically we make a good team and we can stand each other enough to make it work lol. Anyone who wants to be a mod or admin isn't missing much: It's a thankless job where we just kill spam bots and once in a blue moon have to actually moderate the forum and lock a thread. If anyone is interested in becoming a moderator they should take it up with Dan and send him a PM. Although with seven people we already have more than enough people.

There are also other ways to contribute to GR like Master Craig who submits a comic for the homepage.

Well I also can't speak for all the old school mods, but I know for a fact that in the four years I've been a mod there is far less vitriol being thrown between the mods. Back seven/eight years ago, when JCD and Shaft and Used were all made mods, everyone hated everyone. When TNO was in charge, no one really liked him, so there was tons of animosity there. Him, JCD, DL, and others were against Shaft, Stalfros, and others. Masterchris hated everyone. That doesn't happen... at all really.

Plus, everything is no longer micromanaged. So it's a much easier job being a mod.

Honesty, I come here out of habit. Being a mod is a guaranteed way to get shit on by certain posters whenever their topic is closed no matter how good the reason and there really isn't much to do. Seriously, this place *barely* needs to be moderated. But I've been coming here since 2001 and over time have grown to actually care about what a few people here have to say and it's fun to partake in the conversation every now and then. Even now that you and I aren't at each others throats I'm finding myself agreeing with you at times and enjoying a fair bit what you have to say - in your own tongue in cheek, laced with sarcasm kind of way of course ;)

Pus I'm still active enough that there's no point in me not being an admin anymore since it's helpful to be on when there's a spambot just to quickly ban the account/ip.

I also enjoy the fact that there is more of a connection between staff and members now that wasn't always there before.

Being a mod isn't always nice though. I remember Blackstar and I used to get along and we even spammed the boards together one night with FrozenBacon. Then for whatever reason his sole purpose was to annoy the hell out of me. I can't think of a single time I was actually a bad moderator yet would constantly be voted as worst for whatever reason by a select few people. I think it stems from how I was when I was 18-22 or so, which was overly dramatic and kind of annoying. The downside of being around for so long is people associate who you were say ten years ago to who you are now. So yeah, it can be annoying but like everything, it passes. The good generally outweighs the bad I suppose when it comes to this site.

I basically check the forums like I'm a regular member. When there's nothing left to check, I leave. If anything is awry, I sort it. Usually at my login time it's the US overnight bots I have to sort.
Like Longo says, we all get along, and (for the most part) are all mature enough to not mess around too much. Not one person makes the decision outright, we all brainstorm together and come to the best conclusion. No one is above anyone, and that's what I like most!

That's what I like as well. If you wanted to see a shitty mod/admin, I could easily ban whoever pissed me off but we all discuss things and decide from there and usually its a pretty unanimous decision. I think there was only one time someone banned someone without me weighing in and that's because I wasn't on the boards at the time all the shit was going down. I sure didn't care. Otherwise everyone tries to get everyone involved which is nice.

So having us all believe Bretimus is in serious condition is mature enough?

He did say in the parenthesis "for the most part." I like the mods now and Longo as admin. I wouldn't change anything. Some joke around about me being a mod, but I would decline it right now, because of what Lethean said about less moderation.

Well, mature compared to anal sex topics and the like ;)

Plus we all know you're too busy helping people at Wal-Mart to moderate ;)

Yes I've heard of the TNO days and I've heard he was quick to ban people and closed threads just to get the last word. I'm sure when Dan took over it was much like when Homer met Darryl Strawberry.

TNO: You're Daniel Biscoff
Dan: Yes
TNO: You're the new GM?
Dan: Yes
TNO: I'm a GM
Dan: So?
TNO: So are you better than me?
Dan: Well I've never met you before but... Yes.

I uh...I decided to stay at my job. Hear me out, Wal-Mart would be great, but it starts as temporarily. I can't afford not to have as much hours as I do at McDonald's.

Oh, I get it now! I wondering why you said "Open door maim" That part was actually a Vine vid I made. Like this one in which I'm trying to get people to think it's actually happening.
