Not last gen but last-last gen: Chrono Cross and Final Fantasy 8. Chrono Cross is friggin epic. It's a real shame that the sequel never took off.

Finally, I can say I'm not the only one to think of GTA as a repetition fest. I'm not really a zombie person, but Resident Evil's bosses were pretty epic.
